Open-source cloud storage services
There are many open-source cloud storage options that offer secure and cost-free cloud storage for individuals and companies. We offer our customers two self-hosted cloud storage solution:
Nextcloud
Similar to Dropbox, Nextcloud is an open-source program that may be used to store files, pictures, and videos for personal use. It isn't just a private cloud service, though. Nextcloud may have several users added to it so that you can use it as a platform for collaboration to edit files in real time, interact with other users, manage calendars, assign and manage projects, and more. Nextcloud Hub integrates the four key Nextcloud products Files, Talk, Groupware and Office into a single platform, optimizing the flow of collaboration.
ownCloud
It is another self-hosted cloud storage solution that offers file sharing, collaboration, and synchronization across multiple devices. It also includes features like document editing, task management, and audio/video calls. The cloud program Owncloud is extremely dependable and stable. Particularly for commercial uses, it comes highly recommended.
The difference between owncloud and Nextcloud
ownCloud and Nextcloud are both open-source, self-hosted cloud storage solutions that allow users to store, share, and synchronize files, calendars, contacts, and more. Although they share similarities, there are key differences between the two platforms:
Origin
wnCloud was founded in 2010 by Frank Karlitschek, who later left the company in 2016 to create Nextcloud. Nextcloud is thus a fork of ownCloud, with many of the same underlying components and ideas, but with a different development team and direction.
Development approach
Nextcloud has a more community-focused approach to development, with a more open and transparent development process. ownCloud, on the other hand, has a more business-centric approach, with a greater emphasis on enterprise customers.
Licensing and features
Nextcloud is fully open-source, and all its features are available in the free version. ownCloud has a dual licensing model, with a free, open-source community edition and a paid, proprietary enterprise edition that offers additional features and support.
Ecosystem and integrations
Nextcloud has a more extensive app ecosystem, with a larger number of plugins and integrations available to extend its functionality. ownCloud's app ecosystem is more limited, particularly in the free, community edition.
Security
Both platforms prioritize security, but Nextcloud has implemented more advanced security features, such as end-to-end encryption and advanced server-side encryption. ownCloud also offers encryption, but its more advanced features are available in the enterprise edition.
Community and support
Nextcloud has a more active community of users and developers, which can lead to faster updates, more frequent bug fixes, and better overall support. ownCloud has a smaller community and provides more extensive support through its enterprise edition.
